GROUP IS FORMALLY DEMANDING THE RESIGNATION OF THE REGISTRAR OF VOTERS:

Van Nuys, California. Today, Citizens for a Better America, is announcing that it is Formally Demanding the immediate resignation of Registrar of Voters, Mr. Kenneth A. Pettit, Registrar of Voters for Santa Barbara County, California.

Citizens for a Better America is taking this action because Mr. Pettit responding to the Formal Complaint by CBA on December 13, 1996 as saying ‘"It’s just another nutty-gram," Pettit said Monday. “This one was off-the-wall. If I wanted to spend my time in a less valuable way, I’d try to track it down to see if there’s a connection with ...a right-wing group.”’

Mr. Pettit was quoted in a newspaper article in the Santa Barbara News-Press article entitled “Group wants to oust registrar” written by Nora K. Wallace on Tuesday, December 24, 1996.

It is outrageous and inappropriate for the Registrar of Voters to be concerned about the political position of anyone who is concerned about voter irregularities. In fact, the position of the individual that handles elections in any community, county, or state government is a very sensitive one. It is sensitive because the electorate is counting on that individual to be an impartial arbiter of the election process. This is not just a man on the street but the election official.

It is obvious that the Honorable Mr. Pettit can not accomplish the duties that he is responsible for because he can not be that impartial arbiter. He demonstrated that with his statement “... I’d try to track it down to see if there’s a connection with ...a right-wing group.”

Mr. Pettit should be tracking down why he allowed an individual to vote that had a Washington State drivers license, individuals to vote that were not registered, that over one half of all provisional ballots in the entire county came out of 3 precincts in UCSB area, and that he allowed those provisional ballots to be placed in voting boxes where they could be counted as regular ballots. The status of the messenger is not the issue.
